Weekly Rumblings –27 (Resolutions to keep)

A very happy 2019 to all my dear friends and readers, some of whom have noticed that I haven’t written a blog for a while. No excuses, and despite my best intentions, I have been tardy.

An article I read recently both alarmed me and spurred me back to my laptop to write. The article in question was debating the ongoing battle between food delivery companies and their ‘dark kitchens’ to win more market share, and how the ultimate attempt of these companies was to tempt people to stop cooking at home and just order in. Fortunately, despite the pricing wars, it’s still cheaper to cook at home, so the scales haven’t tipped in favour of delivered food. Yet.

My New Year resolution is to encourage the boys to learn some basic cooking skills, by hook or crook. My brats are thoroughly spoilt in that they are used to eating very well and have shown scant interest in cooking. So, they have a double shock awaiting them at university as they will turn up their noses at fast food, and will find themselves unable to cook.

The quest to change has begun. I am no nutritionist, but my target is come up with one-dish combinations combining some veggies, protein and carb, so that they can kill three birds with one stone.

Here are a few of our favourites, and some are bordering on being ‘no-cook’ recipes. To up the glam quotient, the recipes we tried are by none other than the great Nobu himself and my current favourite, Yotam Ottolenghi. As a fair reward for the hardworking souls, my ‘Mum’s drop scones’ do round off this week in style.

Eating well really starts with stocking well, and that’s half the battle won. If you want to add one new ingredient this month to your pantry – try sumac. It’s key for making a delish fattoush salad, adds tang to the turkey burgers, and is excellent in salad dressings or sprinkled on eggs too.

Love your children and make them cook too!
